The wild donkeys are a known staple in the north Peoria area of town. Many drivers in the Pleasant View area often have to take special precautions not to him them on the roads if when they are seen out.
Sadly, on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, a female burro and her day-old foal were out on State Route 74 close to Lake Pleasant when the mother donkey was struck by a car and killed.
The small male foal survived with minor injuries and remained near the scene.
AZDPS Sergeant Roger Hansen responded to a call of the incident. Knowing the young baby donkey would not survive alone in the wild he took action with help.
Sergeant Hansen called Stacie Thomas of One Step Wild Burros and Mustang Rescue in New River to ask for help. Thomas kindly agreed to take in the foal if Sgt. Hansen could bring him to the rescue. Sgt. Hansen loaded up the young burro in the back of his patrol vehicle and drove the few miles to the rescue.
At the rescue, the caretakers were to introduce the foal to a nursing mother burro. The little burro settled in nicely and reportedly has adjusted to his adoptive mom,. The young donkey has been enjoying his life at the rescue playing, eating, making friends and running round. The baby donkey was given the name “Roger” in honor of Sgt. Hansen who saved him.
Roger will soon have a forever home after news that another AZDPS trooper will adopt him when he’s old enough to leave the rescue.
Thank you to Sgt. Hansen for going over and beyond in a difficult situation which allowed for a positive outcome. Click here if you would like to learn more about One Step Wild Burros and Mustang Rescue and how you can support the nonprofit.
