PHOENIX – Superintendent Tom Horne announced that the Achievement Tutoring Program, launched last year to boost academic growth for Arizona students, will be extended through the end of the 2024-25 school year. Funded by $40 million in repurposed COVID relief funds, the program has shown impressive results, with students making substantial academic gains in reading, writing, and mathematics.
“Studies show tutoring to be the best method for academic growth,” Horne explained. “Since its launch, over 30,400 students have participated in Achievement Tutoring, and we’ve seen consistent academic progress.”
Program Highlights:
- Academic gains: 22% of students achieved at least half a year’s academic growth within six weeks.
- Enrollment growth: Participation has grown from 4,200 students in the initial pilot to more than 6,800 students in the latest session, which is still accepting enrollments through October.
Due to federal regulations, the program is now accessible through private providers instead of public schools, with oversight from the Arizona Department of Education.
Parents have shared their appreciation for the program. Colleen, a mother of three, said, “I am incredibly grateful for the services and support provided. My children are more confident and ready for success.” Heather, a single mom, shared, “I could never afford tutoring like this. It’s been life-changing.” Testimonials from other parents echo the positive impact, praising the program’s role in building academic confidence and filling learning gaps.
