PHOENIX – Attorney General Kris Mayes is launching National Consumer Protection Week (March 2-8, 2025) by releasing the top five consumer fraud complaint trends of 2024 and offering tips to help Arizonans avoid scams and deceptive practices.
Consumer Protection and Fraud Trends
“For those who fear scams or feel powerless against fraud, know that I am fighting for you as your Attorney General,” said Mayes. “Last year, we recovered over $5.2 million for Arizona consumers who were harmed by greedy fraudsters.”
In 2024, the Attorney General’s Consumer Information and Complaints Unit (CIC):
- Received nearly 22,000 complaints from Arizona consumers.
- Answered over 28,775 phone calls from individuals seeking help.
- Reviewed more than 23,000 emails regarding consumer protection issues.
- Recovered a record-breaking $5.2 million on behalf of consumers.

- Motor Vehicle Sales, Repairs, and Rentals
- Computers (Web Pages, Online Transactions)
- Mortgage and Real Estate Scams
- Banking (General Services, Unauthorized Fees, Fraudulent Charges)
- Telemarketing, Phone Scams, and Unsolicited Text Messages
Tips to Avoid Consumer Scams and Fraud
- Motor Vehicles: Always get promises and terms in writing before purchasing a car. Keep copies of all paperwork.
- Computers & Online Transactions: Use strong passwords, keep software updated, and research sellers before making purchases. Never send money before seeing a product.
- Mortgage & Real Estate: Read all documents carefully, ensure no blank spaces, and fully understand the terms before signing.
- Banking Services: Regularly check your statements for unauthorized fees and unexpected charges.
- Telemarketing & Phone Scams: Never send money, gift cards, or cryptocurrency in response to an unsolicited call or text. Legitimate government agencies will not threaten you or demand immediate payment.
