Glendale police arrested a man after a dangerous situation in which he pointed a gun at officers and shot an armored truck.
Officers responded to a residence near 75th Avenue and Deer Valley Road at about 9 p.m. on Sunday night for a welfare check after a woman called 911 and reported that her boyfriend had made suicidal comments. The scene quickly turned into a barricade situation after police attempted to reach 34-year-old David McPherson, by telephone. Officers witnessed McPherson exit his home and point a rifle at two officers.
McPherson then yelled to the officers to get off his property and went back inside his home.
According to police, SWAT vehicles were called to the scene and after one attempt to open the front door, officers heard what they reported 10 and 15 shots from inside the house.
Bullets from McPherson’s rifle struck a car and a home across the street. One of the bullets went into a neighbor’s bedroom where an infant was asleep in a crib. “The crib was approximately six to eight feet away from the bullet defect,” court documents read.
The officers did not return fire and after several hours eventually McPherson surrendered to police.
Following a search of the suspect’s house, police found six weapons, body armor with plates and thousands of rounds of ammunition.
McPherson was arrested booked on eight counts of aggravated assault on police officers, one count of endangerment and two counts of criminal damage.
McPherson had a previous charge from April after allegedly pointed a gun at a pizza delivery driver.
