As Martin Luther King Jr. Day approaches, communities across the Valley are preparing to commemorate Dr. King’s legacy with a variety of events, including parades, festivals, and special celebrations. Here’s a roundup of some key happenings leading up to January 20 and on the holiday itself:

MLK Parade & Festival in Mesa

Mesa will host its annual free Martin Luther King Jr. celebration with a parade followed by a festival.

  • Date: Monday, January 20, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Location: The parade runs down Center Street, and the festival will take place at the Plaza at Mesa City Center, 56 E. Main St.

Chandler Multicultural Festival

Now in its 30th year, this festival celebrates diversity through music, art, cuisine, and more. Part of Chandler’s Celebration of Unity, the event honors Dr. King’s ideals and the civil rights movement.

  • Date: Saturday, January 18, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Location: Dr. A.J. Chandler Park, Stage Plaza, 178 E. Commonwealth Ave.

Peoria MLK Jr. Community Celebration

This vibrant event features live music, mural painting, food trucks, and participation from local non-profits and service organizations.

  • Date: Saturday, January 18, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Location: Centennial Park at Peoria Municipal Complex, 8401 W. Monroe Street.

Arizona MLK Celebration Events

The Arizona Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee is organizing several events across Phoenix:

  • Commemorative Candlelight Service
    • Date: Sunday, January 19, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
    • Location: Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, 1401 E Jefferson St., Phoenix.
  • Commemorative March at Eastlake Park
