If you made a purchase at Walmart for groceries from October 2018 to January 2024, you may be entitled to a refund from the company. However, the deadline to apply is approaching quickly.
In recent years, if you have bought weighted groceries or bagged fruit from Walmart, you could potentially receive a cash payment from a settlement reached in a class action lawsuit with the retailer.
According to a lawsuit filed in October 2022, it is claimed that Walmart customers in the United States and Puerto Rico were charged higher prices for specific meat and seafood products sold by weight, as well as certain bulk bagged citrus fruits, than the advertised lowest price in stores.
Walmart has not admitted to any wrongdoing, however, they have reached a settlement of $45 million to resolve the legal dispute. This allows affected customers to file claims for monetary compensation.
According to a spokesperson for the company headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas, the company is committed to maintaining their everyday low prices to assist customers in saving money on the items they desire and require. Despite denying the accusations, they believe that reaching a settlement would be beneficial for both parties.
What is the eligibility criteria for Walmart’s class action settlement?
For individuals who have purchased specific weighted meat, seafood, and bagged citrus products from Walmart in the U.S. and Puerto Rico between October 19, 2018 and January 19, 2024, there is the option to receive cash payments. The amount of payments will vary for each claim. It is still feasible to receive compensation even without a purchase receipt.
What is the potential payout from the Walmart settlement?
Customers who do not have proof of purchase are eligible to receive a compensation of either $10 or $25, depending on the number of eligible products they claim to have bought during the specified settlement period. On the other hand, individuals with receipts or other forms of documentation can potentially receive 2% of the total cost for each product they bought, with a maximum limit of $500.
Those who are eligible will be granted their payments through electronic methods, such as Venmo, Zelle, ACH, or a virtual pre-paid MasterCard. However, those who are unable to receive electronic payments can also request paper checks.
