Two Drivers Sentenced to Prison for Fatal Phoenix Crashes

by

PHOENIX — Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell announced the prison sentences of two drivers involved in separate fatal crashes in Phoenix, highlighting the need for responsible driving during the busy holiday season.

Case 1: High-Speed Collision and Fleeing the Scene

Jesus Soto, 25, was sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter and leaving the scene of a fatal injury accident. In early 2024, Soto was driving at 85 mph with his two nephews in the car when he collided with another vehicle at Union Hills Drive and 15th Avenue.

The driver of the other vehicle sustained a traumatic brain injury and later died. Soto fled the scene without assisting his nephews or the victim.

Case 2: DUI-Related Motorcycle Crash

In another case, Eladio Hernandez, 33, was sentenced to seven years in prison for manslaughter and endangerment. Hernandez, with a blood alcohol concentration nearly twice the legal limit, failed to yield while making a left turn onto 27th Avenue. His truck collided with a motorcycle, resulting in the rider’s death.

Road Safety Warning

“These tragedies were entirely preventable,” said County Attorney Rachel Mitchell. “As holiday traffic intensifies, we see more speeding, aggressive driving, and driving under the influence. Driving responsibly is one of the best gifts we can give each other this season.”

Mitchell emphasized the importance of vigilance on the roads, urging drivers to prioritize safety and avoid risky behaviors.
