Valley Father Arrested For Allowing His 10-Year-Old Son To Drive On Loop 101

Police have arrested a man after he allegedly allowed his 10-year-old son to drive on the Loop 101 Saturday afternoon.

Around 3:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon near Scottsdale Road, 911 received a call from a driver reporting what they believed to be a young boy driving a truck and speeding. It was reported that the driver was weaving and erratically changing lanes.

A trooper located the vehicle and attempted to stop it after the vehicle after witnessing the driver changing lanes unsafely. However, the driver failed to stop, the trooper initiated a pursuit. Shortly thereafter, the vehicle eventually pulled over into the emergency right lane near the 7th Street exit.

According to officials, the officer approached the car and confirmed the driver was 10 years old. The driver’s father, 49-year-old Alvaro Ovando Alvarez was in the passenger seat. Impairment may have played a role in the situation, as the officer found an open container of alcohol in the pickup truck.

Alvarez was arrested and booked into the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office jail. He faces multiple charges including child abuse and endangerment, aggravated DUI and having an open container of alcohol in the car and unlawfully permitting a minor to drive

Officials reported Alvarez’s son will not face any criminal charges.
