On Sunday, a Peoria man was taken into custody for his suspected involvement in the death of his stepfather during a dispute in Phoenix.

The Phoenix Police Department was called to a scene at 43rd Avenue and Buckeye Road on Saturday at approximately 5:30 p.m. due to reports of a shooting and a collision involving a vehicle. Jose Angel Ruiz Leyva, 32, was discovered on the ground with several gunshot injuries upon their arrival.

According to authorities, Jorge Ramirez, 20, allegedly shot his stepfather while he sat in his car in the southwest part of Phoenix.

Ramirez was arrested and taken to jail for charges of second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, and discharging a firearm at a nonresidential structure.

According to court documents, witnesses reported that a black sedan, driven by a Hispanic man, fired approximately five shots. The incident was also captured on video, which showed Ramirez getting out of his car and shooting into his stepfather’s vehicle.

A check of records revealed that Ramirez and his vehicle, which was registered, matched the descriptions given by witnesses.

According to the probable cause statement for his arrest, Ramirez’s mother was in the passenger seat of the vehicle with his stepdad when the shooting occurred. During the investigation, she informed police about a previous altercation between Ramirez and the victim.

During a police interview, Ramirez admitted to the shooting, claiming that his anger was sparked by allegations of domestic violence.

The amount for his bond was established to be $1 million.
